Subject: Re: A question about Issuri
Sorry about
the delay, I was traveling.
One might say that the immediate cause for the Russian advantage was the
western aggression against China;
others might blame the Taiping rebellion of 1850-1864,
and general blame may be placed on the weakness of the Qing dynasty.
Among the background causes were Russian settlement in the region, Russian
naval presence on the Pacific, and Russia's possession of superior and
documented geographical information on frontier areas.
A decisive factor in the Russian acquisition of the Ussuri region was
Russia's assistance to China when, during the Taiping rebellion, China
had to fight two Anglo-French wars.
In compensation for that assistance Qing ceded the region to Russia by
the treaty of 1860. For the earlier period, see my article in Cahiers
du Monde russe, volume 41/1 (2000).

Subject: A question about Issuri
Hello Marina
A friend
of mine, Picabiette, is now near Vladivostok.
She is going
in few days to the Issuri area. She is looking to a lot of travelling
guide and she can't find some information because she is not eveday online
(Internet is expensive in russian cybercafe when you use it intensively)
And she would
like to know why Issuri is in Russia and not in China ?
Can you help
us to understand why.
Thank you
in advance for you answer.
